"Love on the Brain": Generative Poetry Workshop with Luther Hughes on April 30, 2022

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Love is possibly one of the most popular subjects that brings people to poetry. There is nothing better than reading a poem that excites the heart or reveals something dormant. How do we write a love poem? What does it mean to approach love in our writing without risking corniness? The goal of this generative, in-person workshop is to examine and challenge our ideas on what makes up a love poem. We’ll discuss and analyze poems by Donika Kelly, Ada Limón, and Aracelis Girmay, among others, and we’ll write poems in response to prompts that will motivate us to think about love and love poems differently. 

About the Instructor: Luther Hughes is the author of the debut poetry collection, A Shiver in the Leaves, forthcoming from BOA Editions September 27, 2022, and the chapbook Touched (Sibling Rivalry Press, 2018). He is the founder of Shade Literary Arts, a literary organization for queer writers of color, and co-hosts The Poet Salon podcast with Gabrielle Bates and Dujie Tahat. Recipient of the Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellowship and 92Y Discovery Poetry Prize, his work has been published in various journal, magazines, and newspapers. Luther was born and raised in Seattle, where he currently lives.

About the Space: The Parlor is a cozy, inspiring room with a large library table, exposed brick, and natural light, attached to Open Books: A Poem Emporium, located at 108 Cherry Street in downtown Seattle. Just a short jaunt from the Pioneer Square Light Rail Station and surrounded by ample street and garage parking, the Parlor offers a haven for private studio time and gatherings of up to 8 people.
