He is the author of a dozen books. His first collection of poems, \u003ci\u003eShattering Air\u003c\/i\u003e (1996), was published by BOA Editions. The University of Washington Press published his next major volumes of poetry: \u003ci\u003eWild Civility\u003c\/i\u003e (2003), \u003ci\u003eThe Book of Men and Women\u003c\/i\u003e (2009), which received the Stafford Hall Award, \u003ci\u003eCharming Gardeners\u003c\/i\u003e (2013), and \u003ci\u003eRepublic Café\u003c\/i\u003e (2019). He is the author of the novel \u003ci\u003eA Self-Portrait in the Year of the High Commission on Love\u003c\/i\u003e (2023). His nonfiction includes the memoirs \u003ci\u003eA Place of Exodus\u003c\/i\u003e (2020) and \u003ci\u003eThe Education of a Young Poet\u003c\/i\u003e (2017), which was selected a Best Books for Writers by \u003ci\u003ePoets \u0026amp; Writers\u003c\/i\u003e, as well as two collections of essays, including \u003ci\u003eA Long High Whistle\u003c\/i\u003e (2015), which received the Frances Fuller Victor Award, and \u003ci\u003eEvery Writer Has a Thousand Faces\u003c\/i\u003e (2010). He is the founder in 1999 of the Attic Institute of Arts and Letters, and he served as editor of \u003ci\u003ePoetry Northwest\u003c\/i\u003e from 2005-2010. He has read his poems and spoken about poetry all over the country, including teaching appointments at Stanford and Wake Forest universities, among others, and for the past quarter century at Oregon State University where he has been Poet-in-Residence.
