Death is the narrator's constant companion through an exorcism, the burning of her poems, an attempted suicide, and finally, her preoccupation with worldly success. Instead of hallucinations, the narrator learns to think of her experiences as visions, and becomes liberated by the sense of polyphony and dissolution that is inherent in the pronoun “we”.
